What’s All the Buzz About "Selective Coordination"?

Date: Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Location: SRP Information Services Building (ISB), 1600 N Priest Dr, Tempe, AZ 85281

Speaker: Lanny McMahill, Underwriters Laboratories Inc

Topic: "What’s All the Buzz About "Selective Coordination"?"

Prior to the ’05 National Electrical Code (NEC), selective coordination of a building or structure’s electrical system attracted little attention! Selective coordination was simply allowed where an orderly shutdown of the electrical system was necessary and required for certain health care facilities and elevator feeders. However, during the ’05 NEC process a definition of "selective coordination" was added and the requirements were expanded to include emergency and legally required standby systems. The addition of these requirements made sense from a safety standpoint, yet they also created some new challenges and concerns. Lanny will focus his presentation on some of the challenges and concerns for designers, customers, electricians and enforcement officials.
