Benefits and Application Pitfalls of Power Factor Correction Products

Date: Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Location: SRP Information Services Building (ISB), 1600 N Priest Dr, Tempe, AZ 85281

Speaker: Rick Orman, Eaton Electrical Inc.

Topic: "Benefits and Application Pitfalls of Power Factor Correction Products"

Typical industrial facility power distribution systems contain considerable amounts of inductive loads. Such loads can create unnecessary electrical system capacity problems, unnecessary losses, and most importantly increase the user's utility bills - sometimes without the user's knowledge.

At such facilities, capacitors can provide benefits including power factor correction, voltage support, increased electrical system capacity, reduced system losses, and possible reduction in utility bills through the elimination of penalties. As with any piece of electrical equipment, there are a number of application issues that engineers need to be aware of ranging from the very basic to the very complex. Many of these issues will be discussed in a summarized fashion since most have been the subject of their own very detailed presentation and/or technical paper. The goal of this presentation will be to understand the benefits and possible application pitfalls of Power Factor Correction Products.
