Factors that Affect the Reliability of Medium Voltage Adjustable Frequency Drives

Date: Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Location: SRP Information Services Building (ISB), 1600 N Priest Dr, Tempe, AZ 85281

Speaker: David Langham, Eaton Electrical Inc.

Topic: "Factors that Affect the Reliability of Medium Voltage Adjustable Frequency Drives"

Manufacturers vary greatly in their approach to designing and manufacturing MV Adjustable Frequency Drives (AFD). This presentation examines how the differences in components selected, design topology employed, and environmental factors can affect reliability of MV AFDs.

Topics Include:
•Brief review of AFD evolution – 1950's to present day
•Brief overview of the functional design of AFDs
•Two innovations that have greatly increased the reliability of AFDs
•Similarities and differences in design – LV AFD vs. MV AFD
•Five different topologies of MV AFDs – advantages and disadvantage of each
•Methods for Quantifying MV AFD reliability
•Reparability of MV AFDs: how the different manufacturers differ in their approach to the repair of MV AFDs
•Environmental factors: hazardous and corrosive gases, cooling considerations, etc.
•The importance of service and support provided by the MV AFD manufacturer.
